Franta returns to Czechoslovakia and finds his old girlfriend has married the neighbourhood jobsworth, has given birth to a child, and has taken over Barča, his dog. Knowing he has no future with Susan and wanting to preserve her honour, he pretends to have lost his way and asks directions to the next town. The raft emerges from the water, allowing Franta to survive.Īfterward, when the war is over, Franta drives to Susan's home, only to find her with her injured husband recently returned from fighting overseas. His life raft bursts as he tries to inflate it, so Karel tries to drop his own raft, but he flies too low and fatally crashes. Later in the war, while escorting American bombers, Franta's Spitfire malfunctions and he is forced to ditch into the ocean. Soon after, however, Karel learns a sort of love triangle has developed, with Susan being involved with Franta, which leads to a quarrel between the two friends. The latter begins to get attracted to Susan, although Karel believes that Susan is interested in him.įollowing a mission to France where the squadron attacks a train, Karel is shot down, but Franta lands and rescues him, a move that shows that their friendship endures. The next day, after returning to the aerodrome, Karel brings Franta to meet Susan. There he meets and falls in love with Susan (Tara Fitzgerald), although she thinks he is far too young. However, he manages to survive and find his way to a farm. While shooting down a Heinkel He 111 bomber, Karel's Spitfire fighter aircraft is shot down. Franta becomes the unit commander, with the younger Karel under his charge. After their first sortie they realise why the British have trained them so intensely: a young Czechoslovak nicknamed "Tom Tom" is shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf 109 and killed. The RAF is in such a dire need of pilots during the Battle of Britain that eventually the Czechoslovak airmen are allowed to fly. Karel also sees the compulsory English language lessons as a pointless waste of his time. The British make the Czechoslovaks retrain from the basics, which infuriates them, especially Karel, who is both impatient to fight the Germans and humiliated at being retaught what he already knows. However, Franta and his young friend Karel Vojtíšek (Kryštof Hádek), among others, refuse to submit to their occupiers and flee to the United Kingdom to join the RAF. After the invasion, the Czechoslovak Army is disbanded and its Air Force has to surrender its aircraft. His recollections of the war begin in 1939, just days prior to the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. In 1950, during the Cold War, František (Franta) Sláma (Ondřej Vetchý) is incarcerated in Czechoslovakia, because of his prior service in the RAF. British actors include Tara Fitzgerald, Charles Dance and Anna Massey. The film stars Czech actors Ondřej Vetchý, Kryštof Hádek and Oldřich Kaiser. The screenplay was written by Zdeněk Svěrák, the director's father. The script and performances are magnificent.Dark Blue World ( Czech: Tmavomodrý svět) is a 2001 film by Czech director Jan Svěrák, the Academy Award-winning director of Kolya, about Czech pilots who fought for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. Yes, the mood and physical atmosphere are almost relentlessly dark (it needn't have been) The film is completely without humor, and it is much too slow moving. The rest of us are mesmerized as these troubled lives unfold on screen. This is tough to contemplate if you can't wait for your tomorrow's great triumph, or if you see romance as a smooth road to your personal paradise. The three main characters are stuck and seem to have no capacity for getting unstuck. This film might be quite tedious for those in a hurry to move on with their lives. A song popular during the second world war (a recent event in this film), has the line "we're caught between perdition and the deep blue sea." This is an apt description of the three protagonists. First, I think most people don't know where the title comes from. Simon Beale and Tom Hiddleston, the men in her life, are equally impressive performers playing equally limited (Beale) and troubled (Hiddleston) persons. Thus, Hester (played by a wonderful Rachel Weisz) can fascinate those of us who care about the inner working and emotional vicissitudes of a self destructive woman and who will learn about the human condition by considering her behavior. No one has come up with a satisfactory answer, not even a plausible one, and Freud leads the list of the clueless. Why people do things that hurt themselves is a intriguing question which fascinates psychologists and artists alike. This was not a movie for them, but it is a most superior film for older people who have seen people live torturous lives.
